Q: What size rug under queen bed to avoid an eye sore?
Answer: The two most common placements for a rug under a queen bed is at the foot of the bed. The second is a large area rug that is under both night stands as well as the bed and extends at least 18 inches past the bed sides. More than 18 inches is common for the width.

The Most Common Sizes

Keep in mind a queen bed measures 60″ x 80″. It’s smaller than a king bed but larger than a full or twin. If you don’t currently have a queen bed in your bedroom and are ordering all at once use painters tape to measure it out. This will help you make the best decision before you order your area rug.

6′ x 9′

This is the most common area rug size for a queen bed because it fits best in a standard sizes bedroom. (the average is 11 by 12 feet )

8′ x 10′

This is the next size up in common bedroom area rugs. It can work in a standard room but will take up a majority of the floor. Always try to leave at least 18″ of visible floor on the edges of the room.

9′ x 12′

The largest of the common rug sizes. If you have a standard bedroom size or small don’t use this size. It will look awkward since it will run wall to wall. For larger rooms this look spectacular.

If you can’t decide on a rug size and your bedroom allows it always pick the bigger size. When it comes to rugs bigger is better. It might seem like an afterthought ,but the rug can impact the room in a big way.

Placement

Now that we know about the right size rugs to use let’s talk about placement.

To review, the two most common placements for a rug under a queen bed is at the foot of the bed. The second is a large area rug that is under both night stands as well as the bed and extends at least 18 inches past the bed sides.

Keep in mind if you like the warmth of a rug under your feet when you wake up in the morning. It’s comforting and a large area rug that extends on all sides of the bed will be your best option.

If you want a smaller area rug place it at the foot of your bed. This is a great accent piece and fun designs work here.
Stuck between two rug sizes? Always go for the larger size. Larger area rugs look better and worth the investment.
Also, let the room guide you. If it’s a larger room you’ll need a larger area rug. If the rug is rectangular it should run with the width and height of the room.

Placement & Sizes Ideas

if your bed is in the center of the room keep your area rug in the center as well. An off centered rug with a centered bed won’t look right.

Your two options are a smaller area rug centered at the foot of the bed. A 6′ x 9′ or 8′ x 10′ carpet or smaller works here. Second, a larger area rug that completely goes under the queen bed and the two nightstands if you have them.
If you opt for 9′ x 12′ this will go under both night stands and the bed. Keep it centered in the room with the bed. 8′ by 10′ won’t extend past the night stands.

If you don’t have night stands, other furniture, or use floating shelves instead of night stands 8′ x 10′ looks great.

Off Centered Bed Layout

If you have a smaller bedroom and prefer to have the bed push to one side then keep the rug off centered as well in the room.
You can put the area rug at the foot of the bed here too but use a smaller size. An area rug with a width of 5′ is best if your bed is again the wall so it doesn’t extend to far past the queen bed.
A 6′ x 9′ or 8′ x 10′ area rug works under a queen bed up against the wall. 9′ x 12′ is too large.
The last option is placing the area rug on the side of the bed. Various options work such as a rug runner. My favorite are 6′ x 9 and 8′ x 10′ here as well because a queen bed is 6.6 feet long. They look best.
